Edward Tufte Twig Artwork 2003-2009

This piece is 32 feet or 10 meters tall. With 99% air by volume, it has a lightness, a non-monumental quality, a large presence. It is about airspace, torqued steel lines, shadows.

Edward Tufte: Magritte's Smile May 2009
Просмотров 49613 лет назад
Here's a short video showing Magritte's Smile at our studio. Penny Humphrey, my colleague, did much of the creative and production work in making the piece, which was completed a few weeks ago at Polich Tallix. Near the end of the video, Penny and I celebrate the work. Magritte's Smile was installed at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum during my show in 2010.
Sculpture Forgings
Просмотров 6 тыс.13 лет назад
For about a year now, Brad McDougall and I have worked together at his blacksmithing studio in northern Connecticut to make many new artworks. The technical name for blacksmithing is forgings, which is to heat steel red hot and then bang artfully on the steel with manual and power hammers. Below a video by Andrei Severny and ET shows some of the new works and their lively method of production.

Escaping Flatland - Installation at the Aldrich Museum 2009
Просмотров 62415 лет назад
This short HD video shows the process of museum installation of Escaping Flatland, constructed from 14,200 kg or 31,200 lbs of stainless steel arranged in 6 elements each with 4 plates of stainless. Compared to other installations, this was eerily quiet since Clovis, our crane expert, used his battery-operated crane (with a really big battery!) to move the plates around. Gone were the usual die...

iPhone Resolution by Edward Tufte
Просмотров 51 тыс.15 лет назад
WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY The iPhone platform elegantly solves the design problem of small screens by greatly intensifying the information resolution of each displayed page. Small screens, as on traditional cell phones, show very little information per screen, which in turn leads to deep hierarchies of stacked-up thin information too often leaving users with "Where am I?" puzzles. Better to have us...
Edward Tufte: Installation of the Larkin's Twig 2004
Просмотров 88415 лет назад
We installed this piece (many cranes and rigging operations) in the bitter cold in January 2004. I'm grateful to Tallix (a foundry in Beacon, New York) and to United Concrete (Yalesville, Connecticut) for all their help. It is called "Larkin's Twig" because several years before the installation Graham Larkin, then a graduate student in Art History at Harvard, worked as my intellectual assistant...

hi .. the footage is gorgeous .. goes perfectly with my wee tune .. hope you dont mind if i use it .. only for youtube .. will not be used outside YT, and definitely no profit .. yours is the first footage i found that encompasses the same elegance, grace and beauty that i saw, when a bird flew overhead while listening to and making my wee tune ... If not ok to use, just say .. Thanks ;)

Thanks for posting this video. I love slo-mo videos of the large water birds taking off from water, since it is not so easy, and they have to exert themselves strenuously, even "running" along with their feet during one phase, much like swans must do, but not for so long as they. You caught these beauties from early in their take-off, and kept them comfortably in view despite their quickness. Kudos!

I don't think most people realize or have even read of the political and social implications of escaping Flatland's conventions with the help of some "Other" dimensional being. I'm adding this clip to my playlist. Great work giving voice to the voiceless!

I am incredibly happy to see Professor Tufte opining so insightfully on the iPhone interface. For years I thought him antagonistic to anything digital and interactive. It seemed his thesis was that paper was inevitably superior as a means of visually displaying quantitative information, and that he didn't include interactivity and temporality as tools to convey this information. But now I see that he was waiting for sufficient resolution -- in space, time, and interaction, to emerge.

Dear S.O.Rings, Jailbreak is a way to install applications and tweak iPhone not via official Apple route. It came out before the release of the App Store right when this film was made in early 2008. Apple does not recommend using this kind of software and it voids your warranty. It apparently also caused phones to go dead on users provoking endless jokes about iBricks, so it's installation was considered dangerous. Note the fake logos of Network provider and the applications installed. A.

I really like Prof. Tufte's critical analysis but I'm not sure I get his humor... "this is an iPhone jailbreak, don't try this at home". ??? did I miss something?
